Simple Fall Front Porch
One thing that everyone can agree on is that a welcoming entrance to your home is best, right? With just a few simple items, you can get your front entryway decked out for guests this season and it doesn't matter if you are working with a large front porch or a small stoop.
We live in a townhome and have limited outdoor space but that doesn't stop me from decking it out. I started with a couple bales of hay, a few mums and of course - pumpkins. Some basic layering can go a long way in making your space feel like it was styled by a pro. There exists a basic visual rule to group things in threes. The premise behind it is that it gives your eye direction. I tend to think that things do tend to look better placed in odd numbers but not necessarily threes. And, that doesn't mean you need an odd number of items. For instance, if you have four mums, I think you figure out a nice way to cluster three of the mums and one by itself in the vignette. I actually find that after I've styled something with multiple items like this that I tend to like vignettes with four focal items – 3 and 1 – see that is where my odd number rule comes in. I don't tell you all of this to bore you. It is more like a recipe to help get you started. From there, I think you place things however you like them, following the “rule” or not.
I chose red and gold colored mums and a variety of different colored and types of pumpkins to deck out our front door. Our local market is extremely inexpensive and has a wonderful selection of pumpkins including blues, cinderellas and fairy tales. Keep it simple by limiting your ingredients and focus on layering and placement. I think that you will like the results – walking up to our front door or opening the door to leave makes me smile every single time.
